Mayor Carter and the expropriation of Bosque Panul: "The Government has to do its part"
La Florida mayor Rodolfo Carter once again reiterated his call on the Government to take part in the expropriation process of Bosque Panul.
Carter's request adds to previous appeals he had already made to the two prior governments to expropriate the nature reserve, which is currently owned by the real estate firm Gesterra.
In 2015, Carter managed to modify the communal regulatory plan to grant it the least permissive construction standard: a ban on real estate projects, allowing only sports facilities, cultural centers, or recreational amenities.
On the intention to reclaim Panul, the mayor challenged the Government to "do its part" in the expropriation process, arguing that "President Boric has said this is a feminist and ecologist government, and here he has a great opportunity to prove how environmentalist he really is."
Similarly, in an interview with Emol, he explained that "the Chamber of Deputies is also asking the Government for expropriation. Why? Because nothing is gained by the municipality having banned construction, which is all it can do, if the forest remains private property."
In this regard, Carter detailed that he had previously submitted formal requests to former presidents Sebastián Piñera and Michelle Bachelet asking them to expropriate the site, without receiving a response.
"We also sent President Boric a formal request a few months ago. He hasn't responded, but we believe this is the feminist and environmentalist government. If it's an environmentalist government, this at least requires a formal statement from the government. Because the Municipality cannot expropriate this land — it also doesn't have the resources," he added.
Regarding this request, the mayor of La Florida challenged the Executive, saying that if it "claims to be environmentalist it should at least tell us what it plans to do about this. We as a municipality have already done our part; the government has to do the other."
