Fire in Bosque Panul

At around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, a fire affected a large part of Fundo El Panul, burning an area of native forest.
At around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, we received the alert about a fire in El Panul. We followed the smoke and arrived at the end of Calle Bailahuén Sur, where we found two starting points — one at the alley at the end of the street and another at plot 161, about 200 meters apart. We immediately noticed a third starting point, this time inside Bosque El Panul, about 500 meters from plot 161.
We alerted the community and people came to protect their forest. Many anonymous individuals took up their shovels and fought the fire at risk to their own lives. Firefighters and CONAF rangers also did an outstanding job — we are deeply grateful for their commitment.
The fact that there were three simultaneous and widely separated starting points constitutes, in our view, sufficient evidence to presume intentionality. We demand that the Prosecutor's Office investigate those responsible, as these are serious crimes that affected a neighbor's home and, according to firefighters, at least 5 hectares of native forest.
Today Bosque Panul is unprotected. Municipal authorities must urgently amend the zoning plan to protect the precordillera forests, allocate resources to natural risk reduction, and be prepared with a contingency plan in case of forest fires.
We must draw strength and wisdom from this moment — let it make us aware of the fragility of the forest. The responsibility of caring for it belongs to all of us.
The forest does not die; it is always reborn. The roots still live.
