Municipal guards expel visitors and destroy native flora and fauna of Parque Comunitario Panul
The current mayor of La Florida, Rodolfo Carter, has not only failed to protect Bosque Panul, but has also sent his municipal guards to violently expel visitors from within the park, with no consideration for the flora or fauna.
Neighbors from Santa Sofía raised the alarm last weekend about these events taking place in the forest.
While we are in quarantine and people should not be visiting the park, chasing people out on motorcycles is plainly aberrant.
The community declared the Park closed, not only because of the quarantine, but also due to the severe deterioration the forest has suffered as a result of the prolonged drought. The rains of recent weeks brought a REBIRTH to the forest that the community is tending to with great care. Sending a squad of motorcycles into the forest is a genuine attack on Panul, as motorcycles damage newly sprouting native flora and at the same time frighten the fauna through noise pollution.
They destroyed the fragile soil by eroding and compacting it, not to mention the damage caused by opening new trails, especially after rainfall.
Rodolfo Carter once again puts on a pathetic show of power in the Parque Comunitario, just as Piñera did in April at Plaza Dignidad.
We demand that the mayor withdraw his guards from the Park and stop provoking the community. Otherwise we will have to take other forms of action to defend Bosque Panul.
