PUBLIC DECLARATION: SUPPORT FOR TERRITORIAL DEFENSE AGAINST THE ALTO MAIPO HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT
Social Movement for the Recovery of Water and Life declares:
In the face of the authorities' indifference to the proven irregularities committed by the Alto Maipo project — which prompted local organizations to block the passage of Aes Gener workers as the only way to defend the mountains that sustain life in the area, and with it the water system that supplies the Maipo River basin and the city of Santiago — the Social Movement for the Recovery of Water and Life declares:
We express solidarity with and celebrate the boldness of the organized communities of the Cajón del Maipo, supported by residents of Puente Alto, who in a peaceful but firm and forceful manner halted that morning the irresponsible actions of the company Aes Gener and the Luksic group in the territory.
We inform that eight residents were detained. Four of them were minors who were taken to the Puente Alto police station for identity checks, their families were contacted, and they were subsequently released. The other four detainees — one of them a spokesperson for the Coordinadora Ciudadana Ríos del Maipo — were taken for a medical examination and placed at the disposition of the prosecutor's office, where the duty prosecutor dismissed the detention, classifying the actions of those detained as public disorder that does not constitute a crime.
The communities have used every regular channel to halt the devastation of their territory and defend their conviction for a harmonious and sustainable development that continues to guarantee water in quantity and quality for the entire Maipo River basin, including all residents of the city of Santiago. However, the collusion of authorities with the economic groups behind this hydroelectric project — which aims to channel 70 kilometers of river to generate energy for the Los Pelambres mine — has weakened these efforts and forced the use of other mechanisms to assert the local community's will.
The Social Movement for the Recovery of Water and Life invites residents of the Metropolitan Region to learn about the scope of this project and to actively express solidarity with the process of defense being organized from the Cajón del Maipo to preserve the common heritage.
