NEW ARSON ATTACK ON BOSQUE PANUL
It is hard to believe that in less than 3 days our Bosque Panul has been the victim of a new arson attack. This time the fire affected a large area of native forest that had not been affected in the previous attack.
On Saturday, December 8, 2012, Bosque Panul was the victim of a new arson attack. Around 5:00 p.m., nearby residents raised the fire alarm. Fire brigades from Ñuñoa and La Florida, along with CONAF rangers, once again came to Panul to help neutralize the disaster.
This time the fire affected a significant portion of native forest, burning Quillayes, Espinos, Litres, and large quantities of herbaceous plants and grasslands. It also destroyed the habitat of various animal species.
Community volunteers and firefighters found at least three fire starting points, similar to the previous fire. One of the starting points was found just fifty meters from the main house of Fundo Panul. It consisted of a pile of dry grass smelling of fuel, two meters from where the flames began and beside a tree clearly marked with a sack.
As a community we cannot tolerate continued attacks on our territory. Today, December 9, we will meet at the JJVV El Fontanar at 5:00 p.m. to prepare a Forest Assembly where we will decide the actions we will take.
We thank everyone who came once again to stop the flames.
