Landslide: the next step?
Last weekend, heavy rain hit the central zone of our country and we ask ourselves: Could a landslide be the next step?
That Santiago floods is no accident. Successive governments have been planning an irrational expansion of the city for decades. Destruction of habitats, intervention in natural watercourses, logging of native forests. A criminal, pro-real estate policy from the State. Will a new landslide make these authorities understand that Santiago can indeed grow in a harmonious way?
In La Florida, the Macalto project built homes along the path of the Quebrada de Macul landslide, and today it is raising buildings in ravines and native forest under the complicit gaze of the authorities. A little further down, there are also hundreds of homes in high-risk areas, thanks to the efforts of former congressman Carlos Montes, now a senator.
No one is exempt here. Senators, congresspeople, mayors, councilors, and presidents of the day. The city grows at a dizzying pace, with no knowledge of when or where it will stop. Santiago grows much faster than other cities in Chile — is this decentralization?
Construction in the precordillera must be halted right now; we cannot continue sending people to die there. Sometimes it is necessary to recall history in order to take appropriate measures and not repeat the mistakes of the past. We leave you with a piece of history and invite you to learn about the causes of landslides and flooding, and the importance of forests in mitigating or stopping them.
Another rainy front is coming and we ask ourselves: Will another landslide be necessary to put an end to the criminal expansion over the precordillera?
