Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has still not repaired the environmental damage caused in Bosque Panul

On June 21 of this year, several machines entered Bosque Panul, devastating 250 meters of a fully healthy ravine. The community that protects the forest managed to immediately halt the works. The following day, the MOP authorities acknowledged the serious environmental damage their actions had caused, and committed to repairing it — but this commitment has still not been fulfilled, even after the community officially handed them a complete technical report on how to do so.

Mayor Carter denies support to the Forest Brigade of La Florida

The Brigada de Emergencias Alto Florida, the first forest brigade in the country made up exclusively of volunteers, applied for a municipal subsidy of 16 million pesos. The money was to be used for the purchase of a vehicle and basic equipment to carry out emergency prevention and response activities in the precordillera and Bosque Panul. The municipality allocated only 2 million — yet shortly afterward granted 80 million to the Ñuñoa Fire Service for the same purposes: vehicles to operate in the upper precordillera.

Community celebrates the recovery of the entrance to Bosque Panul

On Sunday July 9, the second reforestation of 2017 took place, bringing together hundreds of defenders of Bosque Panul. Neighbors have planted nearly a thousand native trees and shrubs at the entrance to the Park — an area that had been heavily eroded due to severe intervention over recent decades. The extensive reforestation carried out to date has managed to reverse this process. Work also began on the recovery of the ravine that was partially destroyed just days earlier by order of the Municipality of La Florida and executed by the Ministry of Public Works.

Ministry of Public Works and Municipality of La Florida destroy an important ravine in Bosque Panul

Two excavators entered to "clean" the ravine located at the park entrance, through a contract awarded by the Ministry of Public Works at the request of the Municipality of La Florida. This ravine has abundant vegetation and is "stabilized," making the measure completely absurd — it is only destroying an ecosystem that has survived real estate pressure for decades, while also increasing the risk of landslides and flooding.

The fight to protect Bosque Panul continues

Marches, occupations, campaigns, endless meetings: a great social mobilization that bore fruit in January 2012, when the real estate mega-project in Bosque Panul was rejected on environmental grounds. More than 5 years have passed since that "victory," and the forest and the Santiago precordillera remain completely unprotected.

A new fire affected Bosque Panul

Last Sunday January 22, nearly 2 hectares were consumed by the flames — which could have been far more were it not for the swift response of the Brigada de Emergencias Alto Florida, the residents, and the park's users. Once again, the cause was an uncontrolled bonfire.
