Red PrecordilleraLaunch of the book Bosque El Panul and awards ceremony for the Draw Bosque Panul contest
On Saturday April 13, the eagerly awaited awards ceremony took place for the children who participated in the first children's contest "Draw Bosque Panul," and the launch of the book "Bosque El Panul" — where dozens of people gathered to share and celebrate both occasions.

Red PrecordilleraMayor of La Florida Rodolfo Carter will authorize real estate projects in Bosque Panul
In a private meeting held between the Municipality of La Florida and representatives of real estate companies, the current mayor Rodolfo Carter presented a map of "real estate developments" for the municipality in 2019, announcing the execution of three projects within Bosque Panul.

Red PrecordilleraThe "revolution" that keeps Bosque Panul at risk
Bosque Panul has faced various private projects and the stubborn political will of the State, which incentivizes urban growth by supporting the real estate business at the expense of the forests that sustain life. The current government, under the slogan of "accelerating investment," has launched a "microeconomic revolution" whose cornerstone would be the GPS or "Office for the Management of Sustainable Projects" — the successor of the Longueira Committee, which in Piñera's first government sought to lobby for the approval of 80 "emblematic" projects nationwide, including the real estate project planned for Fundo El Panul in La Florida.

Red PrecordilleraThe first forest fire detection tower in the Metropolitan Precordillera, organized and funded by residents, is inaugurated
Given the current condition of neglect and misuse of our forests, the high temperatures and drought, the Brigada de Emergencia Alto La Florida (BEAF, the country's first Volunteer Forest Brigade), together with the organized community, inaugurated last December the first fire watch tower for detecting forest fires in the Metropolitan Region and in Bosque Panul. This structure has been built and entirely financed through contributions from residents, without support from the authorities — except for CONAF, which will contribute two volunteers during the highest-risk months.

Red PrecordilleraCarter's public consultation and the protection that never came
More than six years after that vote (the most massive public consultation in the history of the municipality), Panul remains completely unprotected, and it has been the community that, in recent times, has created a de facto community park to protect the place — both from the real estate threat and from the damage caused by the large number of visitors and the carelessness of some people.

Red PrecordilleraSerious conflict of interest between the Piñera government and real estate project planned for the Hualpén Peninsula Nature Sanctuary.
The Navarrete Rolando family, owner of the OXIQUIM holding company, is seeking to build a massive real estate development at the Hualpén Peninsula Nature Sanctuary in the eighth region — a project opposed by communities in the area. OXIQUIM has Fernando Barros as president of its board, a lawyer for President Piñera and partner of the husband of Environment Minister Carolina Schmidt, creating an obvious conflict of interest at a time when the real estate project is being reviewed by government authorities in the SEIA. This is the same family that attempted to build in Bosque Panul in 2012, a project that was rejected following a massive mobilization.

Red PrecordilleraSerious contamination by Sinergia and Enaco in the precordillera of La Florida
The companies dumped tonnes of earth, rocks, and rubble in the upper part of the "Alto Macul" project, at the foot of the native precordilleran forest. The rubble created a dump 200 meters long, 8 meters wide, and more than two meters high — placed directly below high-voltage transmission towers, reducing the clearance between the power lines and the ground, which is extremely dangerous and prohibited by law. These events demonstrate the vulnerability of the Andean ecosystem that survives in the municipality. The community announces legal action against those responsible.

Red PrecordilleraEnvironmental Court accepts lawsuit over contamination in Bosque Panul
A year and a half ago, the community raised the alarm about the dumping of tonnes of sea sand at more than 80 points within Bosque Panul, which was drying out and damaging its fragile ecosystem, including in ravines that drain directly into the city. The Ministry of the Environment resolved to close the investigation, since Panul is not "under official protection," meaning the owners could continue polluting the forest despite having no environmental permits. The community, together with the Environmental Law Clinic of Universidad Diego Portales, filed a lawsuit against the Ministry, which was admitted for processing by the Second Environmental Court of Santiago.

Red PrecordilleraPress release on the installation of the gate at the entrance to Panul
Given the significant deterioration that Bosque Panul has suffered in recent years, due mainly to the unregulated use of this fragile ecosystem, organizations responsible for its care and protection — including the Brigada de Emergencias Alto Florida, the Red por la Defensa de la Precordillera, Conciencia Panul, and the Neighborhood Councils of the Precordillera of La Florida — decided to build a gate that is being installed this weekend.

Red PrecordilleraLetter from organizations calling for the definitive protection of Bosque Panul
Dozens of territorial organizations, academics, and other institutions demand that the relevant authorities (the president and the mayor) provide definitive protection for Bosque Panul, the last remaining pocket of native vegetation within Santiago's urban boundary, which is today threatened by real estate developers and by the lack of protection and regulation.

Red PrecordilleraReal estate developers on the prowl: the uncertain future of Bosque Panul
The current Michelle Bachelet administration has three months left to fulfill its promise of creating official protection for Bosque Panul, Santiago's last native forest, which today is in the hands of real estate developers. These developers recorded historic gains on the stock exchange following the election of Sebastián Piñera. Given this scenario, the future of Bosque Panul and the Santiago precordillera becomes even more uncertain.
